Rep. Eric Massa has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday afternoon amid reports that he will not seek re-election in November to the U.S. House of Representatives surfaced, and Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks said she is considering a run for the seat.
“Since early this afternoon I have received dozens of calls from my colleagues in Monroe County, across New York State and in Washington who have asked me to run for Congress now that the 29th Congressional District will be an open seat,” Brooks said in a statement released late Wednesday afternoon.
Brooks said she will give serious consideration to running for Congress over the next several days.
Massa, D-Corning, took office in January 2009 after defeating incumbent John “Randy” Kuhl Jr. in the November 2008 election for the 29th Congressional District seat. Massa lost to Kuhl two years earlier.
The 29th district includes parts of Monroe and Ontario counties, and all of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties.
Corning Mayor Thomas Reed II, a Republican, announced last summer that he would run against Massa in the 2010 election.
